Dine United

Month of October 2018 | Time: See List

During the month of October, individuals and families can help those who are most in need in our community by dining out at participating restaurants. When you dine out, you make a difference.

Dine United is a community-wide effort among local dining establishments to generate awareness and support for the United Way. These restaurants will donate a portion of their proceeds to the United Way annual campaign.

Youth Day

October 30, 2018 | 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

More than 800 teenagers from area middle schools and high schools will unite at the Amarillo Civic Center-Grand Plaza to learn about the needs in their own community and what they can do to make a difference. Buses from AISD, CISD, Bushland ISD, River Road and Highland Park will bring their students downtown and over the course of the day, students will visit at least 30 programs funded by United Way of Amarillo & Canyon donors.

Last year, the students who attended Youth Leadership Day went back to their schools and helped raise over $32,000 among their peers. The Youth Cabinet then researched grants and allocated those dollars to local programs and projects. Allocations from this year’s campaign will be announced Spring 2019.

Location: Civic Center - Grand Plaza, 401 S. Buchanan St.

Thursday, September 6, 2018 | 11:30 a.m.

This event will officially kick off the 2018/2019 Campaign. Campaign Co-Chair’s Dane Williams from Valero and Chief Ed Drain from the City of Amarillo will welcome the crowd of volunteers, donors, sponsors and community members throughout the local area and talk about why they support the United Way of Amarillo & Canyon. This year the keynote speaker will be David Brown, former chief of the Dallas Police Department, who is nationally renowned for his community policing efforts. Born and raised by a single mother, Chief Brown grew up in the city’s South Oak Cliff neighborhood. During his tenure, he reduced crime more than any other chief in the department’s history. Officer-involved shootings declined by more than 40% and excessive force complaints dropped by more than 70% to their lowest levels on record. At the time of his retirement in 2016, Brown was the longest-serving – and most beloved – Dallas police chief in modern times.
